A Family Thing

By on Jun 16, 2020

I mentioned finishing up my Mario Brothers projects and I’ve started a new project involving cactuses and some public art but I haven’t been making much progress lately because I have been working on something else. I’ve been working on something for my wife and her family. It all started with a simple gift. Nothing special really, just dishtowels. My wife’s grandmother made a bunch of dishtowels. They were simple but they functioned wonderfully. They were lighter white fabric, about 3 ft by 3 ft and sewn around the edges. As an accent, she embroidered simple fruit designs. They are perfect and I use them everyday. My wife’s grandma passed away about 10 years ago. I still use the towels but they are starting to become worn and stained. They have become part of our everyday lives. They are always sitting on the counter covered in drying dishes or...

Changing Focus

By on Jun 12, 2020

Mailings have started and I’m ready to move on. I wanted to move in a different direction. I once said, “Gifting a cactus is one of the most passive aggressive moves one can make.” I love cactuses for how they look and grow but I hate owning them. No mater how careful I am I always end up with a finger full of spines. I’ve decided to make some that are a little less dangerous.     This is what spurred (ha ha!) the idea. I have some textures and abstract drawings that I wanted to do something with and using a cactus as a canvas seemed like an interesting direction to go. I’m going to riff on these for a little bit. The cactus stands about 7″ tall and I printed it on a 14pt Poly paper. It is plastic you might find a restaurant menu printed on. I made a dieline that folds up into this. The first couple were prototypes I made to work out...

Wrapping up with Mario

By on Jun 2, 2020

I moved around alot as a kid. This sometime left me isolated from others. It can be hard making friends when you move to a new town at the beginning of summer. I did alot of skateboarding. It kept me out of the house exploring and getting to know my new neighborhoods. When I was at home I was fortunate enough to always have a computer around. I would play computer games like King’s Quest, The Black Cauldron and Rogue. The only downside with having a techy dad was he always looked down his nose at console gaming. He was way ahead of his time. We had an Atari but when it burnt out he didn’t replace it because we had a nice computer that could play most of the same games and even better ones including Flight Simulators. I have crashed more planes, in more spectacular ways, than you could ever imagine. When the Nintendo came out it was all I wanted, except for a...

I can now spell Pirahna…

By on May 22, 2020

Just so we are perfectly clear, I did that on purpose. I have been a bad speller ever since they quit giving out candy bars for doing well on spelling tests. Auto spell check has been one of the greatest things to ever happen to me. On that note, sending professional emails has actually helped me develop better personal habits too. I have learned to take that extra minute to review my work before moving on. It has saved me alot of embarrassment and work over time. Hot off the heels of my last project I am close to completing my next. I am pretty happy with how these stickers turned out. I have to wrap this up and do one more sticker and then I’ll be sending out the Mario Bros mailing. Should be going out early June, assuming nothing unforeseen arises, and you never know these days.

The Worst Project

By on May 12, 2020

This project was a real pain in the butt. Something went wrong at every point. The only part that went well in any way was the creation of the art. After that, it was all down hill. I had problems with the plastic stock changing size while printing. This is a common problem but in most cases it doesn’t matter but because the coins were so small and somewhat precise, every little variance and shift in registration stands out. Then when I cut them, the coins weren’t big enough for the vacuum bed to keep the coins in place so they would pop out during cutting and get caught in the blade. I had to produce 4 times what I needed just to get decent sets. The box I designed that kicked off the project was too big to mail so I had to resize that which then meant the condition counters were then too big… I don’t even know if people use this type of thing....

Super Mario Mailing

By on May 6, 2020

I almost have a mailing ready. Hopefully I’ll be sending this out sometime before the end of the month. A few stickers and a buildable. Caution! Dangerous plants inside!
