Layered Drawing

By on Apr 10, 2017

This is the drawing I started over a year ago and set aside. The detail picture above didn’t turn out that well but I think you can see what I did. I have always been obsessed with creating dimension through layers. Maybe it goes back to the old side scrolling parallax of Nintendo games or just something I saw in passing, it is a technique I seem to revisit regularly.A few years ago I picked up a collected trade paperback of Usagi Yojimbo stories. Stan Sakai is amazing. I have to admit, I learned of Usagi Yojimbo from the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. When I was little I move around alot. Sometimes making friends was hard. Sometimes we wouldn’t live in one place long enough to make friends. So I would skateboard and draw. My older cousin was a huge influence on me. He turned me on to rap music, skateboarding, drawing and comic books. Oh and ninjas.Right before one of my...

Dragonair Drawing

I have been coveting high-quality colored pencils for some time now. When I was in high school my teacher loaned me a set of colored pencils that were amazing and amazingly expensive. I used them over a break, probably Spring Break, but I can’t remember which now. Since using them I have always wanted a set. Every now and again I will be at the art supply store and I will eye those pencils but the basic set is about $150 and I cannot just drop that kind of dough on some pencils. I have a mortgage. Lo and behold, there is a store that sells them individually. Sure they are more expensive in the long run but this way I can slowly build a collection and if they are not as good as I remember I didn’t waste too much money. I started with blues. That is the other problem, I want ALL the spectrum. I want white, light blue, sky blue, cerulean blue, ultramarine blue, cobalt blue,...

New Drawing

This is one of those projects that I dropped but I’m picking back up again. If you look close, you might be able to see where this is going. This is another one of those drawings in my sketchbook that will hopefully be a little more than a sketch.Milwaukee’s Best PrinterGreat Online Printing

Another Quiet Saturday Morning

By on Feb 7, 2017

Every once in a while the stars align and I get a Saturday morning to draw. The girls were content with their over-sized cinnamon rolls and new animated feature so I was able to scribble out a quick sketch. We were at the Zoo the other day and they had a new cardinal. It was a little grey guy the likes of which I had never seen. It is smaller and more angular than the typical cardinal. I couldn’t remember what kind it was or where it was from but while trying to find it I did find some neat pictures of grey cardinals. While in school I took a technical illustration class. It was a good experience because it helped me develop my observation skills. Just taking the time to focus on every detail of the subject. Trying to figure out what makes it unique before even starting to draw. I had a professor who would talk about how labeling things makes us lazy. When you look at a chair, you...

Anatomy of a Drawing

By on Jan 4, 2017

So I had an idea for a drawing. Actually it started with the desire for really expensive pens. Every time I go perusing art supplies I see these really expensive Copic pens. Some places actually lock them up. They are around $8-$14 dollars a pen. I have problems doing washes and would like to get better at doing them but I hate wet paper. The way paper wrinkles and curls when it is wet drives me crazy. That is the sole reason I cannot stand watercolors. I thought I would find some nice light grey pens or markers to add some new dimension to my drawings. I then started thinking about the moon. The moon has a lot of texture and would be good for experimentation but I didn’t want to just draw a moon. I did some sketching and came up with this.It is rough I know but I like the idea of dealing mostly with negative space. At this point, I’m a little worried that I will not be able to pull...

Happy Halloween

By on Oct 27, 2016

I finished my drawing. I just want to say that I am not a digital colorist. Colored pencils yes. Photoshop, no. Anyway, Happy Halloween. I’m dressing up as Finn from Adventure Time for Halloween. The costume is pretty silly so I’m excited about it. Here is the final picture uncolored.Milwaukee’s Best PrinterOnline Digital Printing and Customizable Calendars
