Quick Project…Death Note Sketchbooks

By on Sep 21, 2021

I came up with an idea for a quick project. Influenced by my daughter and my latest watching habit, I decided to try making some Death Notes…     They didn’t turn out that great but I was able to accomplish what I set out to do. The reason I don’t like the final product is also what I was experimenting with. The cover is too thick. It’s double thick and made of a leatherette. I hate when you glue two things together and the glue makes the paper wavy, so I was trying to figure out a method for avoiding or eliminating that wave. I first bound the book and then glued the final layer as a wrap around it.     I then clamped down the book between to wood slats and messed around with the pressure until I was able to accomplish a nice flat, even cover.     The cover turned out way too thick but it might be nice after some use. After...

The Stars at Night are Big and Bright

By on Sep 17, 2021

I’ve been having problems sleeping. Not really sure what the cause is but I do know that it has really given me time to think of new projects. This is one of the things that I came up with while tossing and turning in the wee hours of the morning. I decided that if I couldn’t sleep, I might as well make something and this project was perfect for that. There was so much patience required. I started with making some new frames and staining them.     I did some sketching and started building the stars out of clay. Once I had them the right size and shape I had to bake them. While waiting for them to cure I knocked out a few beads for accents and had to bake them too.     I strung everything together with fishing line, using super glue to position critical beads. I then drilled holes in the frame and glued the star-chains into place. Every glue spot...

The Way of the Samurai

By on Sep 9, 2021

I started those drawings of Aku so of course I was going to move on to Jack. While I wasn’t so happy with my sketches…     I did start thinking about my favorite ronin, Usagi Yojimbo. I admit, I first learned from him from his appearance in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles but that was a long time ago and I have read Stan Sakai’s books many times since. I always loved the way the book was drawn. So I started drawing…     I haven’t been this happy with a drawing for a really long time. Don’t really know why. It is probably that emotional connection. The fact that it looks like some of those early drawings helps. I remember trying so hard to draw these and ninja turtles but they never looked quite right.     Apparently practice really does pay off. I am so stoked about this that I just want to keep drawing. Should I...

Foiled by faulty equipment

By on Sep 7, 2021

Awe man! Kids are back to school so I thought I’d take a day off and make some frames. Unfortunately, my router died…     It’s rather disappointing too because I only have maybe 20 hours of use on it. I thought it would last longer than that. It was a Bosch after all. I bought it for myself a couple years ago so I’m sure the warranty has run out but I did contact the company anyway. I wasn’t going to but I told my friend what happened and he forwarded me a link to their page and recommended I send some feedback. I just assumed Bosch made crappy tools but he told me they are actually pretty good. I was routing out the inside edge of my second frame when my hand started getting really hot. I’ve used this a bit so I thought it was odd but didn’t think much of it. When I do my frames I set the piece in the jig which takes about 2-3...

Kevin Parry… video editing wizard

By on Sep 1, 2021

See that guy right there? He is a wizard, or rather a magician. He is a wizard at video editing and concieving videos that mess with perspective and expectations. They, in my opinion, are modern day magic. There isn’t necessarily slight of hand but this is the digital version of it. Behold…     That video has become quite the big deal. There was even a Newsweek article about that video. It’s funny when a print publication does an article about something that only can be viewed digitally and in motion. Reminds me of that “look at this .gif I printed out for you” joke. While he has broken through with these videos some of his others are more intriguing to me…   The ones where the object changes perspective are my favorite. He has posted some “making of” videos that are pretty interesting too. To find out more...
