Inktober 2020…Day 4: Radio

By on Oct 7, 2020

This one really takes me back. When I was little I used to draw 3 things: skateboard ramps, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and boomboxes. I loved drawing boomboxes. I knew I wanted to draw a boombox for “Radio” but I wasn’t sure how I wanted to approach it so instead of doing a very precise accurate representation, I decided to channel my younger self and just draw.     All I had going through my head the whole time I was drawing was LL Cool J’s “I Can’t Live Without My Radio.”

Inktober 2020…Day 3: Bulky

By on Oct 6, 2020

This is one I wasn’t sure about. I started thinking about it while I was finishing up the wisp but really didn’t know what I was going to do. I let the word rattle around in my head while we enjoyed our weekend away. We decided to visit a pumpkin patch and get some pumpkins. We were in the middle of nowhere. This wasn’t some touristy, roadside suburban pumpkin stand, oh no, we had to tromp through the mud and find our pumpkins. The pumpkin patches were surrounded by corn fields, tall grasses and other farmland…     I off-handedly made a joke to my wife about how it would be a good place to dispose of a body and I then knew how I was going to handle “bulky.”     Huh, that got dark quick. Sometimes I’m a little disturbed by my sense of humor too. I might turn this into a greeting card. I haven’t figured out the...

Inktober 2020…Day 2: Wisp

By on Oct 5, 2020

I don’t know why but I have always been fascinated by will-o’-the-wisps. They are phantom lights that appear in wooded areas, especially swamps, bogs and marshes. They can be explained as a natural phenomenon caused by chemicals released during organic decay which is why they are more common in swamps and bogs. Travelers would see them at night and decide to investigate only to get lost or trapped in the bog, never to be seen again. Like many dangerous things, they became part of folklore and stories were made to warn people from following the lights. When I saw the prompt was wisp, I knew immediately I was going to draw one but I wasn’t sure how. There have been many depictions that I could copy or draw upon but I just did a magikarp and I wanted to do something that wasn’t necessarily just copying someone else’s art. We took a trip this weekend and while...

Inktober 2020…Day 1: Fish

By on Oct 5, 2020

Inktober is officially under way! For whatever reason I usually start with a Pokémon so a Magikarp seemed appropriate. I’ve already started cleaning the final scan to get it ready as a sticker…     Feeling pretty good about things this year. I’m already having fun and I already know what I’m doing for Day 2 but I haven’t figured how I’m going to pull it off yet.

Inktober is Nigh

By on Sep 30, 2020

I will not lie, I have really been burnt out. I haven’t been as depressed lately. I had a bit of a rough patch for a while there but, while better, things have been a bit… blah. I have been drawing but I haven’t been very motivated. I have been picking up old drawings and finishing them off but nothing has really excited me lately. Now, however, Inktober is just around the corner and I am ready. I decided to get a jump start. I have my first two days planned and I have my goal for the month…     I usually start with a Pokémon of some sort and this year’s first prompt is FISH so why not start with a magikarp. I spent an evening drinking and drawing, working and reworking and I am pretty happy with the direction this is going. It has been a while since I was excited about a drawing. I could not wait to get back to it last night…    ...

Driving Off a Bridge

By on Sep 28, 2020

I have been having the worst nightmares lately. It is weird because I normally don’t remember my dreams. Last night I woke up at least 5 times while having the same nightmare. I am driving across a drawbridge when it starts to open. Sometimes there is construction on the bridge and I fall through a hole after the other drivers refuse to let me merge. Sometimes I just lose control of the van and just slide off the edge. I’m always driving a van. A big white cargo van.     My first job out of college was as a delivery driver. I had just moved to a new city and thought, “What is the most difficult, anxiety inducing job I could possibly get at this juncture in my life?” Obviously it was as a delivery driver. This was before GPS was widespread or even cell phones. I had a phone in the van for emergencies but only emergencies. I would have to map out...
