A Quick Drawing(?)

By on Jan 12, 2021

I’m going with drawing for this one. I suppose it could be considered some kind of relief sculpture but I like to think of it as a drawing. This goes way back to the first skateboard I ever wanted. My cousin took me to the skate shop and said, “Look at that…”     Mark “Gator” Rogowski. Now that guy’s trajectory is a tragic story for another time. Anyway, I’ve been drawing these spirals ever since. Yesterday the thought wormed its way up from the deep recesses of my mind and I decided to make a quick drawing. For a quick one-off, I’m pretty happy with how it turned out.     I’m not sure which I like most, the monotone or duotone. Maybe I’ll work though this a little more and see where it goes. I like messing around with layers and this is really pushing that...

Orchid Progress

This one is getting away from me. It is going to take a while to get it where I want it. It has become a meditative piece. I start to get impatient and anxious while working on it so I have to center myself. I know it is going to take a really long time so I have to embrace that. Sometimes it isn’t easy.

United Parcel Service

By on Jan 8, 2021

When I was in high school my friend got a job at UPS. He started early and by the time we graduated he was driving a super nice car with a boomin’ stereo. It was a Union job and as far as I know he might still be at it. I ran into him a few years later and he was still working there but he had been promoted so he was no longer slinging packages. He already owned a small house and I was working at a video store living out of my Chevy Blazer. He admitted that it really sucked for a few years but he stuck with it and it really paid off. I still think of him when I see stuff like this…     Well actually I really think of him being a little more like this guy…     But who knows, the way things are changing there may no longer be a need to train carriers to go into the field. It might end up more like a video game. Did you know that UPS officially runs a...

Orchid…a start

By on Jan 7, 2021

I’ve always wanted to draw an orchid. It’s one of those things I’m not sure I can pull off. They just look so dang cool! There is a reason why they are always popping up in Anime and other stylistic drawn mediums. I’ve just started so who knows how this one is going to turn out…     I might have to salvage the final drawing by turning it into an animation. Kind of like some of the earlier ones I’ve done.

Art History: La Belle Heaulmière by Rodin

By on Jan 6, 2021

“A great artist—a master—and that is what Auguste Rodin was—can look at an old woman, portray her exactly as she is . . . and force the viewer to see the pretty girl she used to be . . . and more than that, he can make anyone with the sensitivity of an armadillo, or even you, see that this lovely young girl is still alive, not old and ugly at all, but simply prisoned inside her ruined body. He can make you feel the quiet, endless tragedy that there was never a girl born who ever grew older than eighteen in her heart . . . no matter what the merciless hours have done to her.” Robert Heinlein’s “Stranger in a Strange Land”     I took alot of art history in college. Along the way there were some specific pieces and artists that captured my imagination and awe. I want to start sharing some of those with you. While I try to make sure these posts don’t...
