An Early Morning Text

By on Jan 5, 2021

I got a text this morning that has me in a contemplative place. Thanks to this website and working on some of the projects featured here, I kind of reconnected with one of my cousins. We weren’t in constant contact or anything, just a few texts back and forth. He liked some of the Mario Bros stuff I had been working on and after not having talked or seen each other for almost 25 years he asked for a sticker. I sent a bunch of stickers and some other stuff I’d been working on and we texted a little more. I sent a few more things in the mail but they came back “Return to Sender.” He wasn’t returning my messages so I reached out to my Aunt. He had checked himself into an in-patient rehab center. I got the address and sent him one of the cactus buildables as well as some little stuff. I think I sent him a nerd pad too. A couple months later he messaged me...

Santa’s Gift

By on Jan 5, 2021

It has now spread to Santa Claus. Eventually I will have to acknowledge it myself but I’m not quite there yet. I can’t quite keep up while talking to true Pokémon fans but I’m getting there. I still get eye-rolls when I pronounce Pokémons’ names. Santa dropped off this little guy…     It was a fun little build. My daughter stayed up late and we talked while I put him together. She was working on developing some characters for a short comic she wants to write. I kept asking questions about her characters to help her flesh them out a little. After a while she had developed an outline for a story. You can definitely see the Stranger Things influences but she also had some good character stuff going on. I’ll be interested to see if she follows though and how it turns out.

Too Early for a Wrap-up?

By on Dec 16, 2020

Christmas cards have been sent and gifting is about done. I am already looking back at the year and evaluating how things went. About 6 years ago I was sitting around thinking about how I hadn’t done a single painting all year. I wasn’t drawing or doing anything in my spare time other than watching TV. I decided to start drawing again. I didn’t have a specific goal in mind. I just wanted to start drawing regularly in an attempt to do something. I started small. I gathered some old leftover paper with different colors and textures and made them into a small sketchbook. I mean small, like 4″ x 6″ small. That size wasn’t intimidating. Even a doodle could end up filling the entire page. I started some new podcasts and made a habit of ending each day drawing with my headphones on. Last year ended with the decision to shutdown my website and blog and just...

Final 2020 Ornament Post

By on Dec 10, 2020

For the last few years I have been trying to end the year on a good note. I always try to do something creative that I can share with others, often family. I started this a few years ago when I made a barbecue sauce. I am never happy with barbecue sauces. They are usually too sweet or not tangy enough so I spent a year working on a sauce. I constantly tweaked it until I was happy with it. That Christmas I designed a label and called it Uncle Jerry’s Wild Hair BBQ. I spent hours drawing and redrawing pictures of rabbits and hares until I got it just right. I made up a huge batch, bottled them and gave them to friends and family as gifts. I kind of put myself out there for the first time. Up until that point I always doubted my own abilities and would keep my art and ideas to myself. Some of it is a confidence issue and some of it is an issue of trying to be humble. I think I value...

Getting into that Holiday Spirit

By on Dec 4, 2020

I am super stoked with my new project. I went from concept to finished piece in a little over 24 hours. I am really happy with how it turned out… I still have to make a box but the ornaments are done. I did a short run of only 20 so if you want one you will need to contact me. These are going to cost about $5 each to ship so I can’t just send them out to everyone. I was hoping to send them out to everyone on the list but those costs added up really quick.
