Waking up in 2027

By on May 27, 2021

There is a fascinating story that has recently come to light. A Spanish TikToker named Javier has started posting from the future or perhaps an alternate universe. He woke up in a hospital in the year 2027. He was all alone. He started walking around Valencia, Spain but found it devoid of life. He started filming his explorations and posting them to his Tik Tok account. Some incontinuity in the timestream allows us to see his videos now and even communicate with him. Valencia, Spain normally has a population of about 800,000 but not one person, or even animal, appears in his videos. He takes advantage of his situation by driving a Mercedes off an abandoned lot as well as taking a Ducati for a spin. He even visits a large soccer stadium, exploring the abandoned locker rooms and the soccer field.   This video is well produced and explains the situation really well…...

Here we go again… this time it’s a snake plant.

I knew this one was going to be on the agenda. It is a good contrast to the other two so I’m working on it before I was intending to. I’m a little intimidated by this. The variegated leaves are pretty intense. I’m not totally sure how I am going to tackle it.     I don’t know how much detail I should do with the pen and ink and how much to leave to just color. I am going to start with some experimentation. It is going to be a balancing act with the fine lines. The smaller stickers are kind of tiny so I’m afraid too much line work will be lost and the final print will just look muddled and fuzzy. The main focus of this one is going to be the variegation so I want that to be crisp and bright. Just writing that has helped me start to make my decision.

Another Sticker Done

By on May 21, 2021

Finished with my colors and made up the stickers. It was fun doing a post-mortem with my daughter. We talked about the differences between the actual plant and the final sticker. She was there for most of the process so she saw how I changed things and the choices I made. The final drawing is quite a bit different from the plant but I think alot of those changes made for a better sticker.     The biggest difference is obviously the petals. The thing I like about this plant is the contrast between the stem and petals. I pushed that contrast. I made the petals even lighter and I made the variegated patches less prominent. I mentioned in the drawing that I wanted to focus on the shapes so by pushing the contrast between the stem and petals, while downplaying the petal detail, I kept the focus on those shapes. I also like how the stems change color going from a dark...

New in the Succulent Line…

By on May 19, 2021

Picked up a new succulent the other day. It is a Rainbow Elephant Bush (portulacaria afra variegata). Cute little thing…     The cactus drawing was something that I had been wanting to do for a while. I was happy with how it turned out so I wanted to do some more little drawings of plants. I took a week off from drawing and when I came back I thought my new succulent might make a good study. I spent some time just looking it over and decided to use it as more of a starting point rather than an actual study.     I like some if the shapes more than the actual leaves so I decided to make them more abstract. The nice thing about the cactus was its simplicity. I tried to keep that in mind as I sketched. I started with more realistic details of the leaves to get a feel for them before slowly moving to just shapes.     While I was inking I was really...
