Foiled by faulty equipment

By on Sep 7, 2021

Awe man! Kids are back to school so I thought I’d take a day off and make some frames. Unfortunately, my router died…     It’s rather disappointing too because I only have maybe 20 hours of use on it. I thought it would last longer than that. It was a Bosch after all. I bought it for myself a couple years ago so I’m sure the warranty has run out but I did contact the company anyway. I wasn’t going to but I told my friend what happened and he forwarded me a link to their page and recommended I send some feedback. I just assumed Bosch made crappy tools but he told me they are actually pretty good. I was routing out the inside edge of my second frame when my hand started getting really hot. I’ve used this a bit so I thought it was odd but didn’t think much of it. When I do my frames I set the piece in the jig which takes about 2-3...

Kevin Parry… video editing wizard

By on Sep 1, 2021

See that guy right there? He is a wizard, or rather a magician. He is a wizard at video editing and concieving videos that mess with perspective and expectations. They, in my opinion, are modern day magic. There isn’t necessarily slight of hand but this is the digital version of it. Behold…     That video has become quite the big deal. There was even a Newsweek article about that video. It’s funny when a print publication does an article about something that only can be viewed digitally and in motion. Reminds me of that “look at this .gif I printed out for you” joke. While he has broken through with these videos some of his others are more intriguing to me…   The ones where the object changes perspective are my favorite. He has posted some “making of” videos that are pretty interesting too. To find out more...

AKU!!!

By on Aug 31, 2021

One of my favorite things to do is stay up late and draw or paint. Now I like to listen to podcasts but back in the day the TV would be blaring in the background. It was interesting because I witnessed the birth of alot of things while staying up late drawing. I saw many things before they really took off: Comedy Central, or The Comedy Channel as it was called then, Mystery Science Theater 3000 and many early standup comedians. One thing I watched was the birth of The Cartoon Network. Mostly they played old Hanna Barbara cartoons but they had a few originals like: Cow and Chicken, Ed, Edd n Eddy and Dexter’s Laboratory. In 2001 a new show debuted on the Cartoon Network, Samurai Jack. There have been a few shows that I fell in love with before they even launched. For example, the first time I saw a commercial for South Park I wrote the premiere date on my calendar. I...

Finished geometry and a little crunked-up branding

By on Aug 27, 2021

Finished everything up. Got some new pens so I blew through a crunked up logo. As a way of blowing off steam, I knocked this out really quick. Cleaned it up a little just so it would vectorize well and then made some stickers…     Didn’t want to put too much time into it, the whole point was to have it be a little, I don’t know, dirty or somethin’. Those turned out to be some really fine lines so I was limited in how small I could recreate them. I really had fun doing them. I wanted to do some drawing last night but the in-laws are in town and that just gets awkward.     Look at that edge… I like my drawings neat so this was a little bit of a challenge for me. See in the “K” where those lines get a little too close and fill in? Drives me nuts, but I am actually liking it on this piece. I slapped a sticker on my...

The Polybius Conspiracy

By on Aug 26, 2021

I just binged a podcast that was fun but frustrating. It deals with an urban legend from, or at least based in, the early 80’s. 1981 to be exact. Being that it all happened in the 80’s and it is an urban legend, nobody is real clear when the story started but it kind of looks like this might be one of the earliest internet memes, popping up on Usenet message boards in the mid-90’s. The story draws upon all the best elements: teenagers, seedy locations, emerging technologies and of course government conspiracy.     The legend is centered on an arcade in Portland, Oregon. Not a family-friendly mall arcade but a dark seedy inner-city arcade. Where rumors of drug use and prostitution run rampant, as do unsupervised teenagers. One day a new game appears in the arcade. A nondescript black cabinet with the name Polybius scrolled across the top. Nobody knows...
