I just finished up a new sticker. I haven’t made the bookmark yet but that is in the works. I’m pretty happy with how it turned out but after looking back at some of the pictures I think I’m going to have to go back in and do some color correction. It starts with a sketch. I usually do quite a few before I finally figure out what I want to do. I have started a few other Pokémon drawings that die in this stage. If I can’t get excited about the project I will move on and mull it over for a while. Inking comes next. I really enjoy inking but the sketch is always my favorite. I like the clean look of a nice inking but there is something special about pencils. They seem fresher or more alive? I am enamored with colored pencils right now. They are fun to work with, fairly clean and easy to get out and put away. I’ve been working with colored pencils for a long...

In the Pines

I took printmaking too soon. Actually it kind of feels like I did alot too soon. Or maybe it was all those things that planted the seeds that are now germinating. There is something I really dig about making art on wood. The wood grain really adds something special.

Lunch Bag Art – Yo-Kai Watch

By on Jul 31, 2017

Yo-Kai Watch is the weirdest show. The first episode was all about how the grade school boy was caught by a girl coming out of the school bathroom after dropping a deuce. She then goes and tells everybody in the school, totally embarrassing him. As it turns out it isn’t the girl’s fault, she is just possessed by a spirit or Yo-Kai. My oldest has started to really like the show and the dollar store has a huge supply of the toys all for a… dollar. A dollar because it is the Dollar Store, nevermind. So this was my daughter’s lunchbag. A couple posts ago I talked about how it was a special thing just for her, well apparently her bags haven’t gone unnoticed. She told me a girl was being really mean to her asking what made her so special. To top it off the girl’s mom was going to make her lunchbag 100 times better… I feel bad for that poor girl’s mother. Her mom is probably just doing...

Pika Pika Perler

We just spent the weekend at my in-laws house. They live in rural Wisconsin, which has its upsides and its downsides. We used to go alot more often but now we only go a couple times a year. When we were visiting more often I started to despise going. There were a few reasons, one of which was sheer boredom. I have mentioned, with children I am not afforded the luxury of boredom, which is true and amplified there. After we had kids I would find myself working twice as hard taking care of the kids because they were bored. Being as it was my in-law’s house, my normal tools for keeping the girls occupied were no longer available. This made the situation even more frustrating for everyone involved. About a year ago I decided to remedy the situation. It took me a little while to come up with a decent solution but I realized if Grandma’s house had special activities...

Lunch Bag – TwoFer

By on Jul 19, 2017

The last few lunchbags I’ve done have been pretty bad so I didn’t even post them. My daughter has a field trip today so I took a little extra time and made a nice one. She was pretty excited when she saw it. She was trying to guess what I drew saying things like, “Ugh, it’s probably Moana…” I was starting to think maybe I should stop doing them, but when she saw it she actually squealed. Then she began to frown. I asked her why she was upset and she told me she wanted to keep it. I think that is why I like doing the lunchbags. There is something nice about how they are disposable. They are fleeting and temporary except for a photo. It is something special that I do for my daughter that is only for her and not long for the world.

Mickey as Wolverine Update…

By on Jul 14, 2017

I made some prints. We have a new printer at work that prints silver. I was messing around creating some sample files (more on that later) when I realized I had the scan of this on my desktop. I cleaned it up a little and made his claws and buttons silver. So this is what I am going to do… If you contact me by email, comment on this article or any other way I will send you a print. I have already signed five copies and put them in envelopes. It doesn’t matter when you contact me, as long as I still have one left I will send it to you. I am not sending stuff out of the US, because that is a pain in the ass, but if you get in touch I will send one out. I kind of hope some day this blog will catch on and people will start sending me requests.

Mickey Mou… err Wolvie Mouse

By on Jul 13, 2017

I was doing some cleaning and I ran across an old sketchbook. I started flipping through and found this drawing. I totally stole this from someone else. It was the header image for an article full of hand-wringing over the recent, at the time, announcement that Disney was buying Marvel Comics. I always loved Wolverine’s brown suit so I redrew the picture with a little older costume.

Mmmmm…Summertime

By on Jul 10, 2017

Summer is here. Well, it has been here for a little while but Wisconsin decided to take its sweet time bringing in the warm weather. It’s here now and I just want to jump around like Steve Martin when the phone book arrives in The Jerk. We went up North for the Fourth of July but I couldn’t wait to start my holiday. My wife could not stop laughing when she got home from work. I was sitting outside with the most stereotypical Wisconsin snack of cheese curds and beer. I didn’t grow up in Wisconsin but I’m here now so I might as well act like it. This seemed like a good way to start our vacation so I carried the theme throughout. We were able to spend most of our time up north on the water. I probably, no I definitely, spent too much time in the sun. I had more than a couple beers floating in a giant donut tube. It was like living in Homer Simpson’s...
